Algeria to host first meeting of GRI’s scientific committee

ALGIERS-Algeria will host the first meeting of the scientific committee of the Gas Research Institute (GRI), Energy Minister, Mustapha Guitouni announced Sunday in Algiers.

GECF is an intergovernmental organization created at the 8th session of the Informal Forum of the same countries, held in Moscow in December 2008.

It is currently composed of 12 countries: Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela, while Azerbaijan, the Iraq, Kazakhstan, Norway, Oman, Peru and Angola have observer status.

Mr. Guitouni also said that the workshop on digitization in the hydrocarbons sector, organized by the Sonatrach group, was part of the preparations for the holding of the first meeting of the Scientific Committee of the Institute for Gas Research.

Referring to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the minister said that the use of existing and emerging digital technologies could increase the world’s technically recoverable reserves of 3% for oil and unconventional gas.

Mr. Guitouni recalled that the feasibility study that formed the basis for the creation of the Gas Research Institute had also demonstrated that process digitization, advanced data analysis, robotics, automation and Connectivity can lead to substantial capital gains.

For his part, Sonatrach group CEO Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour said the group is currently working on the deployment of a modern HT (high technology) infrastructure with the implementation of a digital application, the effects of which will be measured over the next few years.
