ALGIERS- A driver on board a Peugeot 301, run, yesterday, Sunday, March 22, 2021, over a policeman on live, as this latter, on duty, and in charge of traffic stopped him for passing a forbidden path in Algiers’ Hydra.
The driver, who harshly protested claiming to have a medical emergency, did not hesitate to run over the police officer and drag him for up to 100 meters.
A biker, who filmed the entire scene, chased the driver and then alerted law enforcement officers on duty near the gas station on Larbi Alik Street.
Forced by the police, the driver had to stop on the sidewalk to be arrested while the law enforcement officer, victim of this assault, was transported to Les Glycines hospital. His life is not in danger according to a police source.
The incident sparked outrage among internet users on social media.
The driver was remended in custody and will be tried by the Bir Mourad Rais tribunal on March 29 on charges of violent assault against a public order officer while performing his duties and refusal to obey the injunctions of the police officer.
For his part, the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and National Planning, Kamel Beldjoud, paid a visit to the police, victim of this dramatic accident, to inquire about his state of health.
It is a tradition within the ranks of the DGSN to provide assistance, aid and support to police officers and their families, especially when they find themselves in such circumstances.
