CAN 2025: Algeria officially announces candidacy in place of Guinea

ALGIERS- Algeria will apply for hosting the Africa Football Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said that it has withdrawn the organization of the major continental sporting event from Guinea.

The decision of the Algerian authorities to apply to host this prestigious continental competition, organized only once by Algeria in 1990, was confirmed this Saturday afternoon by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Abderrazak Sebgag.

“It is time for Algeria to organize major events, we are going to present a good file to organize the African Football Cup of Nations CAN 2025. We are going to prove that Algeria is capable of doing it. The CAF inspection delegation was satisfied with the sports facilities for the CHAN 2022 African Nations Championship that Algeria will host next January. We will defend our candidacy until the end,” Abderrazak Sebgag told the press a few minutes before the start of the CHAN 2022 draw ceremony.

And to add: “Algeria which organized, last Summer, the Mediterranean Games, the U17 Arab Cup and which is preparing to host the CHAN (African Championship reserved for local players), has shown itself capable of ‘organizing international sports competitions’. “The specifications for CAN 2025 are the same as those of CHAN,” he noted.

For his part, the President of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), Djahid Zefizef, has officially announced Algeria’s candidacy for the organization of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) 2025. He said, on Saturday, that Algeria will bid to stage the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after original choice Guinea were stripped of the hosting rights.

Speaking during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) draw ceremony at an Algiers opera house, the first in charge of the round ball Dz announced that “Algeria will be candidates to host the 2025 AFCON”.

“He added that Algeria has all the capacities which allow it to welcome the CAN,” referring notably to stadiums, hotels, airports and hospitals.

« I encourage an Algerian candidacy », declares Patrice Motsepe

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Patrice Motsepe, announced, in Algiers, the reopening of applications for hosting the African Cup of Nations (CAN) in 2025, following the organization’s withdrawal from Guinea “because the infrastructures of the country are not ready and lack of means”.

The CAF president also called on Algeria to apply for the organization of this edition.

“I encourage Algeria to submit its candidacy to host the CAN 2025, I would like to offer them the opportunity to organize this tournament, it has been a very long time since Algeria has hosted the CAN (since 1990). There is world-class infrastructure and the necessary amenities that allow it to host such a competition….Algeria has a history with football, of which all of Africa is proud,” Motsepe said at a press conference.

For the record, Algeria has already hosted the African Cup of Nations in 1990. An edition won by the Fennecs.
