Algeria: Former Head of State Abdelkader Bensalah to lay to rest, tomorrow

ALGIERS- Abdelkader Bensalah, former Head of State, former Speaker of the Council of Nation and one of the founders of the National Democratic Rally (RND), who died on Wednesday dawn, at the age of 79, following a long illness will be burried tomorrow after Dohr prayer at the Martyrs’ Square in Al-Alia cemetery (Algiers).

ALGIERS- Abdelkader Bensalah, former Head of State, former Speaker of the Council of Nation and one of the founders of the National Democratic Rally (RND), who died on Wednesday dawn, at the age of 79, following a long illness will be buried tomorrow after Dohr prayer at the Martyrs’ Square in Al-Alia cemetery (Algiers).

Born on November 24, 1941 in Fellaoucene, Tlemcen, Abdelkader Bensalah held several senior positions. He chaired the National Transitional Council and the People’s National Assembly (APN) from 1994 to 2002.

Appreciated by the former Presidents of the Republic, Liamine Zeroual and the late Abdelaziz Bouteflika, he held the position of the Speaker of the Council of the Nation from 2002 to 2019. In April (2019), he became Head of State after Bouteflika’s resignation.

Abdelkader Bensalah made his final public appearance in the last legislative elections while fulfilling his duty.

His death came less than a week after the death of the country’s former president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
