Bread waste during Ramadan: Considerable quantities of bread thrown in dustbins

ALGIERS- 8 million-plus bread baguettes were wasted during the month of Ramadan nationwide, with a value of 88 million dinars,” according to Sabrine Bekkar, a manager at the National Waste Agency (AND).

Speaking at “This Morning” national television show this Saturday, Ms Bekkar said that “a heavy toll of considerable quantities of wasted bread has been recorded during the month of Ramadan, adding that “during this month, 8 million breads were thrown away, with a value of 88 million dinars”.

To this end, she pointed out that “these losses due to the waste of bread made with imported wheat in foreign currency are a serious loss for the national economy”.

According to a study by the AND, the amount of household waste, including food waste and single-use plastics, produced during the month of Ramadan increased by 10% compared to the average recorded in the previous months of the year, estimated at 1.12 million tonnes per month.

The same source clarified that the rate of food waste amounted to 19% of the total household waste produced during Ramadan, which also consists of final non-recyclable waste (53%) and plastic packaging waste and paper (23%).

A recent study published by the Association for the Protection and Guidance of the Consumer and its Environment (APOCE) notes that “350 million dollars thus go, each year, into the trash cans because of unconsciousness and je-m’en-foutisme of people’.
