Algeria / GDP: Growth of 1.3% in the first quarter of 2018

The growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Algeria was 1.3% in the first quarter of 2018 compared to the same period of 2017, APS learned from the National Office of Statistics (ONS).

However, the first quarter of 2018 was characterized by a decline in growth in the hydrocarbons sector with a decrease of 2% compared to the same quarter of 2017.



As for non-hydrocarbon growth, it was 2% compared to the first quarter of 2017, driven mainly by Agriculture, Industry, Fishing, Construction-Public Works and Hydraulic sectors.
Regarding Merchant Services, growth was 6.6% in Transportation and Communications, 0.5% in Commerce, 3.8% in Business Services.

For Non-Merchant Services activities, growth was 5.3% in Real Estate and 5% in Financial Services (Banking and Insurance).

As long as industry is concerned, of the ten (10) industrial branches, five (5) experienced positive growth. These are the Building Materials (+ 12.1%), Water and Energy (+ 8.2%), Agrifood Industry (+ 6.1%) and Chemicals , plastic and rubber (+ 3%) and Wood, paper and cork (+ 1.8%).


As a reminder, overall GDP growth was 1.6% in 2017, while non-hydrocarbon growth was 2.6%.

By sector, in 2017, growth was 4.8% for Industry, 4.4% for the BTPH (including services and public works oil), 3.8% for Services Marchands, 2 , 4% in Non-Merchant Services, while the Hydrocarbons sector recorded negative growth (-2.8%).
