Qatar, the organizer of the World Cup-2022 and the criticized country for its treatment of immigrant workers, will introduce a minimum wages for laborers, said Wednesday the official agency.
No details on the amount of the minimum wage or the date of its entry into force have been provided.
Qatar News Agency also announced that the emirate has signed bilateral agreements with 36 countries, from which it draws a large part of its approximately 2 million foreign workers to provide legal protection.
These announcements came just before the start of a crucial meeting of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on Thursday, which could see this UN agency launch an official inquiry into the plight of migrant workers in Qatar.
They were made public by the Minister of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs Issa Saad al-Jafali al-Nuaimi, at a meeting with foreign diplomats.
Qatar has been repeatedly pinned by NGOs on the conditions of workers, particularly on the construction sites of the World-2022.
