33 million mobile subscribers, 10% of ADSL subscribers in Algeria

ALGIERS - The number of mobile subscriptions in Algeria last year rose to nearly 33 million against only three million for fixed telephone lines, said Sunday the Regulatory Authority for Post and Telecommunications (ARPT).

  •    For the broadband Internet, the number of subscribers to different ADSL networks has reached 830,000 at the end of February, representing a penetration rate of about 10%, said the communications manager of the ARPT Medjahed Faisal quoted by the APS.
  •    The Algerian population is 36 million inhabitants.
  •    For mobile phones, the Egyptian OTA (Orascom Telecom Algeria, Djezzy) remains the market leader with 46% stake, i.e. 15,087,393 subscribers in 2010. For the group of Naguib Sawiris, this represents an increase of about half a million additional subscribers in one year, the same source said.
  •    Before Djezzy, the public operator Mobilis Telecom Algeria has declined. He lost during the same period more than half a million subscribers (632,726) in 2010 rising to 9,446,774, or 28.8% of the market.
  •    Third, the Qatari group QTEL Watania Telecom Algeria (WTA Nedjma) had 8,245,998 subscribers in 2010, up slightly from 2009 (213,316 new customers), representing 25.2% of the market.
  •    For fixed telephony (public) a little more than 3 million subscribers were recorded on 28 February 2011.
