Vostok 2022: Algerian Army ANP takes part in Command, General Staff strategic military exercises in Russia


ALGIERS- People’s National Army (ANP) is taking part in the Command and General Staff strategic military exercises “Vostok-2022,” which began, on Wednesday, in Russia, said the Ministry of National Defense in a statement on Thursday.

“As part of the strategic command and staff exercise “Est-2022″, hosted by the Russian Federation during the period from 01 to 07 September 2022, with the participation of the armies of 13 countries including Algeria, the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Yunus-Bek YEVKUROV, supervised Wednesday, August 31, 2022, the official opening ceremony of this exercise”, specified the same source.

“The participation of the People’s National Army, represented by a combat unit under the Land Forces, is an opportunity to exchange and share experiences with foreign armies, as well as to improve the execution of joint missions,” the statement concluded.

The Russian strategic exercise Vostok 2022 is bringing under one roof troops, operational forces and observers from many countries, including Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, India , Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Laos, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Syria and Tajikistan.

Deputy Russian Defense Minister Colonel-General Yunus-Bek Yevkurov in the presence of the heads of military contingents of foreign countries announced the opening of exercises.

“Today, soldiers and officers of 10 states are standing in a single formation, and a total of 14 countries are taking part in the exercise. Tens of thousands of servicemen and thousands of units of equipment are performing combat training missions according to a single plan at nine training grounds in real time,” Yunus-Bek Yevkurov said.

The deputy minister said joint exercises as part of a coalition of states help to develop a common understanding of the organization of troop training, their management and interaction at the operational and tactical levels, strengthen friendship and combat camaraderie between military personnel.

Representatives of defense ministries of the states participating in the exercises, who made opening remarks, stressed the peaceful nature of the joint maneuvers, commitment to the course of mutual understanding and cooperation, strengthening the combat unity between the armed forces of the participating states. They called on the servicemen of the coalition grouping of troops to demonstrate high training, professionalism and interaction in the joint implementation of training and combat missions.

A total of more than 50,000 troops and more than 5,000 pieces of weaponry and military equipment are used in the exercise, including 140 aircraft, 60 warships, boats and support vessels.

Algeria to host first joint anti-terrorist military exercises with Russia

The first joint anti-terrorist military exercises between Russia and Algeria will take place in November. The maneuvers will involve tactical movements to seek out, detect and destroy illegal armed groups.

The two countries have agreed on an exercise plan and the organization of logistical support, including accommodation and catering for the troops.

As clarified by the Southern Military District of Russia, the maneuvers are to take place next November at the Hamaguire base in southern Algeria.

The exercise will involve 80 soldiers from the Russian South and about 80 soldiers from the Algerian armed forces. Soldiers will practice searching, detecting and destroying terrorist groups in desert terrain.
