ALGIERS- Eleven fires have been reported since Sunday morning across six provinces, one of which was fully brought under control, the general directorate of the Civil Protection said.
“We have recorded since this morning, 11 fires in the provinces of Béjaïa (3), Skikda (3), El Taref (2 of which 1 has been fully extinguished), Oum el Bouaghi and Tipaza (one fire each),” declared the deputy director of statistics and information at the level of the DGPC, colonel Farouk Achour, specifying that the units of the Civil Protection managed to put out, yesterday Saturday, “47 sources of fires in 12 provinces”.
The concerned provinces are “Béjaïa (19), Sétif and Skikda (6), Jijel (4), El Taref (3), Tlemcen and Chlef (2) and Bouira, Tissimssilt, Tipaza, Constantine and Oum El Bouaghi ( one fire each)”.
In addition, Colonel Achour said that the DGPC has recorded since the beginning of June to date, “889 forest fires through the provinces of Béjaïa, Sétif, Jijel and Skikda”.
These fires devastated, he added, “532.42 hectares of forest, 668.50 hectares of maquis and 579.16 hectares of brush”.
Noting that the DGPC recorded in 2021 “8,450 fires and a loss of 10,029 hectares of forest, 2,963 hectares of maquis and 3,673 hectares of brush”, explained Colonel Achour.
Asked about the origin of these fires, Colonel Achour did not rule out the human factor and the heat wave period that certain regions of the country are going through.
