ALGIERS- Algeria will become one of the pioneers in the production of edible oil in Africa with the entry into service of two new factories, said the Minister of Commerce, Kamel Rezig.
Minister Rezig referred, on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at the inauguration, alongside his Industry counterpart, to an edible oil refinery with a production capacity of 400 tonnes.
The “El Mahrous” oil production unit, a subsidiary of the public group of food industries AGRODIV, specified the member of the government, has a production capacity of 400 tons, stressing that the daily consumption of this widely consumed product is estimated at 1600 tons.
According to him, the entry into service of this unit is likely to reassure a better distribution of this product throughout the national territory.
“Algeria will become one of the African leaders in the production of edible oil with, in particular, the entry into service of the “Kotama” factory in Jijel and that of Tipasa,” he pointed out.
Disruptions in the distribution of edible oil: Several measures taken
Several measures have been taken to deal with the disruptions in the distribution of table oil recorded in certain wilayas of the country, indicated, on Wednesday, the director of the organization of markets, commercial activities and regulated professions at the Ministry of Commerce and of Export Promotion, Ahmed Mokrani.
Speaking on National Radio, Mr. Mokrani reported on several practical measures initiated by the Ministry of Commerce in coordination with edible oil production units with a view to increasing production and monitor the distribution of this essential material at the level of the wilayas where disturbances have been reported.
The services of the ministry follow and control the operations of supply of the market by all the essential products in particular the products of mass consumption, including table oil, assured Mr. Mokrani.
In this sense, the same official said that the trade services intervened at the level of the regions registering fluctuations in the distribution by giving instructions to increase the quantities of production in coordination with the managers of the oil production units located in the wilayas of Algiers, Oran, Béjaia, Annaba and Oum El Bouaghi.
According to the latest statistics advanced (until Tuesday) by Mr. Mokrani, the distribution capacity has been increased to more than 2000 tons / day, a figure that exceeds the national needs estimated at 1,600 tons / day.
And to add that the production units produced 4,433 tons / day of this material, which makes it possible to satisfy the demands of the citizens.
Among the measures taken by the Ministry of Commerce, Mr. Mokrani cited the intensification of control operations on the distribution of this material through the monitoring, 48 hours in advance, of the quantities produced in particular in Constantine, Khenchela, Oran and Souk Ahras.
As part of the strengthening of the production of this product, the capacity of the Algiers unit, recently recovered and producing the “Safia” quality label, will also be increased from 160 tons per day to 550 tons per day from next February in order to cover the needs of the wilayas of the center (Algiers, Boumerdes, Bouira and Tipasa), added Mr. Mokrani.
