Madrid, Jul 01, 2022 (SPS) The Spanish Congress of Deputies adopted, on Thursday, a draft non-binding motion calling for the return of Spain to its position of neutrality on Western Sahara and the re-establishment of a friendly relationship with Algeria, local media reported.
This draft motion was voted on, during a plenary session, by 193 votes in favor of the motion, 110 against and four abstentions.
“A draft motion on Spain’s foreign policy comprising 15 points was presented by the parliamentary group of the People’s Party (PP). The 13th point concerns the restoration of relations between Spain and Algeria and respect for Spain’s historic position vis-à-vis Western Sahara within the framework of international law and United Nations resolutions,” Polisario Front representative in Spain Abdellah El-Arabi said in a statement to APS.
As a reminder, on April 7, the Spanish Parliament voted a proposal, reaffirming the inalienable right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
Spanish MPs then approved a non-legislative proposal submitted by three parliamentary blocs denouncing Madrid’s “illegal” reversal of position regarding the conflict in Western Sahara.
A position reiterated, on May 27, when the Spanish Congress adopted a resolution reaffirming the need to conclude the process of decolonization of Western Sahara, in scrupulous respect for international legality and UN resolutions in this area, while expressing the rejection, in the strongest terms, Madrid’s decision to adhere to the Makhzen’s pseudo “autonomy” plan on the Western Sahara issue.
