ALGIERS- Algeria has expressed its solidarity with Afghanistan following the devastating earthquake that hit the east of the country, causing human and material losses, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad said Wednesday in a statement.

“Algeria expresses its fraternal solidarity with Afghanistan following the devastating earthquake that struck the east of the country, causing significant human and material losses,” read the statement.

“Algeria presents its sincere condolences to the families of the victims, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured”, noted the same source, adding that “Algeria is convinced of the capacity of the brotherly Afghan people to overcome this painful ordeal thanks to the necessary solidarity and support from the international community,” the statement added.

A powerful earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan early Wednesday, killing at least 1,500 people and injuring 2000-plus others with the toll expected to rise. The 6.1 magnitude quake flattened more than 3,000 houses and caused widespread damage to public property.
