Details on President Tebboune's three-day state visit to Turkey

ALGIERS – The three-day state visit made by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to Turkey at the invitation of his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, enabled the signing of several agreements and memoranda of understanding aimed at further strengthening bilateral cooperation in all areas and bringing out a convergence of views on issues of common interests.

President Tebboune began his three-day visit by meeting representatives of the national community established in Turkey. He, on this occasion, reassured the members of the national community on the financial situation of the country.

On the second day of his State visit and after the solemn warm welcome reserved for him, President Tebboune had one-to-one talks with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Discussions were dubbed as “rich and deep” and positive for the two sisterly countries and the two brotherly peoples.

Talks aimed, he said, “to reinforce our strategic and historic bilateral relations, as the two countries celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations”.

Talks also revealed a convergence of views on issues of common interest, in particular the Palestinian cause, the crisis in Libya and the situation in the Sahel, as well as both sides’ willingness to raise the level of their trade and of investments, said President Tebboune.

In turn, President Erdogan indicated that his country highly “considers the role played by Algeria in North Africa and the Sahel, adding that the talks with his Algerian counterpart focused on “joint action to be taken” at the international level and the ways and means of hoisting bilateral cooperation on the diplomatic and economic levels and in various fields serving the highest interests of both nations.

He also affirmed that Turkey “supported Algerian steps” to diversify the economy.

The Turkish President reported, in this regard, the conclusion of an agreement for the opening of a Turkish International School in Algiers and a Turkish consulate in Oran.

Mr. Erdogan also offered a symbolic gift to President Tebboune, consisting of a portrait of Emir Abdelkader and a correspondence with its translation addressed by the latter, in 1841, to Sultan Abdelmadjid in which he congratulated him on his accession to the throne.

In Ankara, Presidents Tebboune and Erdogan co-chaired the work of the first session of the High-Level Cooperation Council between the two countries, and co-signed the Joint Declaration of the first meeting of this Council.

On this occasion, 16 cooperation agreements and memoranda of understanding were signed in several sectors, such as; Energy and Mines, Finance, Trade, Industry, Information and Communication, Public Works, Fisheries , Science and Technology and Innovation, Micro-enterprises, Social Works, Vocational Training, Culture, Education, Environment and the fight against cross-border organized crime.

Recognition of President Tebboune’s efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation

Another stop on President Tebboune’s state visit to Turkey is his visit to the Mausoleum of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and to the museum containing documents and personal effects of the late president.

In Istanbul and on the third and last day of his visit, President Tebboune was awarded an honorary doctorate decree in international relations by the University of Istanbul, one of the prestigious Turkish universities and the third most popular destination for Algerian students.

The honorary doctorate decree was awarded to him “in recognition of his efforts in international and regional cooperation and the development of relations between Algeria and Turkey”.

Speaking on the occasion, President Tebboune expressed the wish to see relations between Algerian and Turkish universities intensify, particularly through twinning actions.

In a speech delivered during the honorary doctorate ceremony, the Vice-President of Turkey, Fuat Oktay assured that the Algerian-Turkish relations had known “remarkable development” in recent years thanks to the important role of the President Tebboune.

He also specified that the Algerian-Turkish relations “are going through a new phase”, thanks to the efforts made by the two parties aimed at strengthening cooperation, in all areas, within the framework of the “continuous strategic partnership” between the two countries.

President Tebboune also met with Algerian and Turkish businessmen, before chairing, in Istanbul, the opening of the work of the Algerian-Turkish Business Forum, in which more than 300 economic operators from both countries took part.

He invited, on this occasion, Turkish businessmen to invest in Algeria, especially since the cooperation agreements, signed on Monday, constitute “a solid basis for bilateral cooperation”, pending the adoption, soon, of the investment law, which “will be at the service of investors, so as to open up new horizons and ensure their protection”.

President Tebboune left Turkey, on Tuesday for Algiers, after a three-day state visit at the invitation of his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
