ALGIERS-A US delegation managed, Wednesday, to break the unjust security siege imposed by the Moroccan occupation forces on the family home of the Sahrawi human rights activist Sultana Sayed Ibrahim Khaya in the occupied city of Boujdour for more than a year, according to a statement by the American Center for Human Rights Action.
The American Human Rights Center said that volunteers from the United States, such as Ruth McDonough and Adrian Kane, had arrived at the family home of Sultana Khaya, “to protect the family from human rights violations and break the siege imposed on the house by the Moroccan forces” and which has lasted for nearly 500 days.
The Center for Human Rights Action highlighted that “for the first time, and after more than a year of the siege imposed on the family of the Sahrawi fighter Sultana Khaya, four representatives of human rights defense organizations from the United States of America were able to see the reality of the illegal siege on the family of Sultana Khaya and her family and managed to enter the house.”
Sahrawi human rights activist Sultana Khaya said that “the human rights delegation that broke the siege imposed on her house, consists of two men and two women, including a doctor, who came to show solidarity with her against the repression she is subjected to by the Moroccan forces, in violation of international law.”
For his part, human rights defender Ruth McDonough said, according to the statement: “Violence against women must stop everywhere. I am here to support Sahrawi women who are demanding their rights,” Jack Healy, President of the Human Rights Action Center and former Executive Director of Amnesty International USA, insisted that “ the US government should defend human rights in Western Sahara.”
The Human Rights Action Center calls for an end to the rapes, the accountability of those responsible, and the guarantee of freedom of movement for the Khaya and her family and all visitors. The American Human Rights Center also supports the demands of Sultana Khaya and her family, including the removal of forces and barriers around their home and neighborhood, and the treatment of the contaminated water tank.
