Trade Minister, categorically, refuses any increase in price of subsidized bread

ALGIERS – The director of the organization of markets, commercial activities and regulated professions at the Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion, Ahmed Mokrani, said, on Wednesday, that the ministry categorically refused any increase in the price of subsidized bread, noting that a report has been sent by this ministerial department to the public authorities comprising several proposals for dealing with the demands of bakers.

Speaking on the National Radio, Mr. Mokrani indicated that “the Ministry of Trade categorically refuses any unjustified increase in the price of subsidized bread”, recalling that the price of this product is regulated by Executive Decree No. 96 -132 in force since 1996.

The ministry’s services noted that bakers from 6 wilayas increased the price of subsidized bread from 10 to 15 DA without prior notice.

“This increase is unacceptable as this product is made from subsidized flour, of which we import 7 million tons per year”, explainثي Mr. Mokrani, adding that “the ministry has received on several occasions the federations of bakers and listened to their concerns and prepared a report for the public authorities to take charge of their demands “.

“The trade services have supported some of these demands, including the continued supply of subsidized flour and the fight against the phenomenon of selling bread on the sidewalks,” said Mokrani, noting that other demands relating to costs of electricity, gas, water and other matters were submitted to the concerned ministerial departments .

Regarding the rest of consumer materials, the same speaker recalled that the finance law did not provide for any increase except for sugar after the institution of the value added tax (VAT) of 9%, adopted following the proposals formulated by various sectors with the aim of reducing the excessive consumption of this material.
