Former Police Head Hamel’s appeal trial: Verdict handed down !

ALGIERS- The verdict of the appeal trial of the former Director-General of the National Security and members of his family was deivered by the Court of Algiers.

To this end, Abdelghani Hamel was sentenced to 8 years in prison. His eldest son, Amiar Hamel, was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Chafik Hamel and Mourad Hamel, other sons of the Major-General, were, respectively, sentenced to 4 years in prison and 3 years in prison.

The daughter of the main defendant, Chahinez Hamel, received an 18-month suspended sentence while his wife Salima Annani received a one-year suspended sentence.

The same court handed down a 2-year prison sentence against the former director of the OPGI of Hussein Dey (Algiers), Mohamed Rehaimia. The former wali of Oran, Abdelghani Zaâlane and the former director of public real-estate of the wilaya of Tipaza Ali Bouamrane were each sentenced to one year in prison.

The former wali of Oran, Abdelmalek Boudiaf was, on the other hand, acquitted. The trial opened last Wednesday, at the first criminal chamber of the court of Algiers. This case was reinscribed on the roll following the decision of the Supreme Court which accepted the cassation appeal against the verdict delivered by the Algiers court in August 2020.

The main defendant Abdelghani Hamel, his wife, his sons (Amiar , Mourad, Chafik) and his daughter Chahinaz, are being prosecuted for several charges, including “money laundering”, “illicit enrichment”, “influence peddling” and “obtaining lands by illegal means” .

The former walis of Oran, Abdelmalek Boudiaf and Abdelghani Zaâlane, the former wali of Tipaza, Moussa Ghellaï, the former wali of Tlemcen, Bensebane Zoubir, as well as the former director general of the Promotion and Management Office of real-estate (Opgi), Mohamed Rehaimia, are also prosecuted in this case.

As a reminder, the Algiers court sentenced Abdelghani Hamel to 12 years in prison, while his children received sentences ranging from 5 to 8 years in prison. For his part, the general prosecutor at the court of Algiers had requested a sentence of 16 years in prison against the former Police Head and 12 years in prison against his three children.

A 3-year prison sentence had been requested against his daughter. In addition, the criminal chamber at the court of Boumerdès, yesterday, adjourned, at the request of the defense, to December 15, the new appeal trial of the former Police Head. On June 4, 2020, the Boumerdès court sentenced Abdelghani Hamel to 12 years in prison.
