ALGIERS- The Grand Mosque of Algiers, Djamaâ el-Djazaïr, has received this year’s “International Architecture Award 2021” from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture Art Design.
“Congratulations to Algeria on the Grand Mosque of Algiers being selected as one of the best international architectural designs of 2021. The annual awards are given by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design alongside the European Center for Architecture Art Design. Germany-based architectural firm KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten designed the Grand Mosque, ”wrote the US Embassy in Algeria on its facebook page.
Spread over an area of 30 hectares, this religious, scientific and tourist building has 12 additional buildings built over 400 square meters.
Built in the heart of the capital on the territory of the commune of Mohammadia, Djamaâ El-Djazair has a prayer room of 20,000 m2 that can accommodate up to 120,000 faithful. This hall is distinguished by octagonal columns decorated with marble, a large mihrab (used by the imam to lead prayers) and the 6 (six) kilometers of calligraphic writings, some of which were carved on marble and stone with a laser system, decorating the prayer room as well as the various other spaces of the monument.
The mosque, which has the largest minaret in the world with 265 meters long, is the largest in Africa and the third largest in the world after Masdjid Al-Haram in Mecca and Masdjid Al-Nabawi in Medina.
“Djamaâ El-Djazaïr” also has a house of the Koran “Dar El Qoran”, with a capacity of 1500 places, dedicated to Algerian and foreign post-graduate students in Islamic Studies and Human Sciences.
