Portuguese ship capsized at Algiers’ port, 17 sailors rescued, one missing

ALGIERS- The civil protection units of Algiers' province intervened today, Wednesday, in order to rescue 17 sailors who were on board a Portuguese ship that was parked in the port of Algiers after it had leaned on the right side due to the leakage of sea water inside it, according to a statement issued by the General Directorate of Civil Protection.

ALGIERS- The civil protection units of Algiers’ province intervened today, Wednesday, in order to rescue 17 sailors who were on board a Portuguese ship that was parked in the port of Algiers after it had leaned on the right side due to the leakage of sea water inside it, according to a statement issued by the General Directorate of Civil Protection.

The statement indicated that the civil protection units of the province of Algiers intervened at around one thirty in the morning in order to rescue 17 sailors who were on board the Portuguese ship “IVAN MADERA”, which was parked in the port of Algiers at berth No. 09, after it leaned on its right side due to the leakage of sea water inside it.

According to the same source, 06 sailors of Filipino nationality, who were lightly injured, were transferred to Mustafa Pasha Hospital, while information obtained from eyewitnesses indicated the presence of one (1) person missing at sea.

Nine divers from the Civil Protection units, with a half steel boat, were mobilized in the search process, which continues, the statement concluded.
