Premier receives Indian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs


ALGIERS – The Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, Mr. Aïmene Benabderrahmane, received Thursday, September 16, 2021, the Indian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shri V. Muraleedrharane, who is on a working visit to Algeria, indicated a press release from Prime Minister’s services.

The meeting constituted an opportunity for a “broad exchange of views on the state and prospects of strengthening Algerian-Indian relations and the consolidation of the partnerships established between the two countries, particularly in the economic field,” specified the same communiqué.

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, for his part, received, on the same day, at the headquarters of his ministerial department, the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shri V. Muraleedharan.

The agenda of the meeting focused, particularly, on the possibilities of bilateral cooperation in the field of energy and mines as well as the seawater desalination, a press release from the Ministry of industry and mining pointed out.

To this end, the two ministers highlighted the quality of bilateral relations, agreeing on the need to further enhance them in the future.

During the presentation of his department’s plan for the development of the sector, Mohamed Arkab invited Indian companies interested in the oil and gas sector to contact Sonatrach to present their prospecting and production requests, within the framework of of the new law on hydrocarbons which offers great possibilities and certain facilitations for investors.

The two sides also discussed partnership possibilities in the fields of petrochemicals, fertilizer production and phosphate processing.

In response to Algerian proposals, the Indian foreign minister said his country was interested in developing trade between Algeria and India in the field of petrochemicals by increasing the quantities exported to this country. The mining sector was not left out as the two ministers began discussions to establish greater cooperation in this sector, in particular for research, mapping as well as mining and production.

The Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, for his part, expressed the same wish to see Indian companies involved in the development of mining projects recently launched in Algeria.

Finally, the two ministers indicated that the two countries will jointly work to define the targeted projects with the installation of a technical group whose mission will be the implementation of a roadmap to ensure their achievement.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra held, in Algiers, a meeting with his Indian counterpart, Shri V. Muraleedharan, during which both parties discussed issues of common interest, including the development of bilateral relations.

Speaking at the end of this meeting, the head of the Indian diplomacy told reporters that he, at the head of a large delegation, had “productive and fruitful discussions” with Minister Lamamra, adding that they focused on “issues of ‘common interest and bilateral concerns’.

“We tackled the latest developments at the bilateral and regional levels,” highlighted the Indian diplomat, while assuring that India and Algeria enjoy “solid and cordial relations”, underpinned by their common historic struggle against colonialism and mutually beneficial cooperation in different spheres.

“The discussions made it possible to review the state of bilateral relations with a view to promoting cooperation in trade and other sectors,” he declared.

The two ministers discussed the holding of the next Algerian-Indian joint commission in New Delhi.

To this end, an agreement between India and Algeria on visa exemption for diplomatic and official/service passports came into force as of September, 15th 2021.

The Indian Minister held, as part of his official visit, a meeting with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chakib Rachid Kaid, and discussions were extended to delegations from both countries.
