Algeria – As part of the investigation into the lethal forest blazes, this summer, in different provinces of the country, sixteen people were arrested in Tizi-Ouzou and Béjaïa, the command of the National Gendarmerie announced in a statement released on Monday evening.

Those arrested (8 in Tizi-Ouzou and as many in Béjaïa) are active within the terrorist Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK), according to the same source. They will be presented to the competent courts after the completion of the legal procedure, the statement added.

In addition, 11 other individuals arrested in connection with the assassination of Djamel Bensmaïl, are involved in the fires, according to the Gendarmerie which ensured that the membership of those arrested in the MAK has been ” established by technical and scientific evidence ”. “The investigation is still ongoing to capture all those involved,” pointed out the same source.

The statement further specified that among those arrested were “a founding member (of the MAK)”, “the treasurer of the organization”, “a coordinating president” and “a journalist”. They were in contact with the president of MAK, Ferhat Mehenni, added the same source.
