Algerian FM congratulates Maldivian counterpart, elected new president of UNGA

ALGIERS- Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum congratulated, on Tuesday, his Maldivian counterpart, Abdullah Shahid, who was elected president of the 76th General Assembly (GA) of the United Nations (UN).

“Congratulations to my counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Abdullah Shahid, on his successful election as President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

We aspire to work closely with him, in order to consolidate the role of UN organization, to face the various challenges which arise on the international scene “, wrote Mr. Boukadoum on his Twitter account.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid was elected president of the 76th session of the UN GA on Monday.

His priorities are to help the world fully recover from the Coronavirus pandemic, to work to improve the health of populations and economies, while working to ensure vaccine equity.

Mr. Shahid was elected by secret ballot, defeating his rival, former Afghan foreign minister Zalmai Rassoul.

Mr. Shahid obtained 143 votes out of a total of 191 voting member states of the United Nations, against 48 votes for Mr. Rassoul.

The candidate must obtain at least 96 votes to be elected.

The Maldives’ foreign minister will take up his new post in September 2021, replacing the current GA president, Turkish Volkan Bozkir.
