ALGIERS- Despite a context marked by the global health crisis induced by the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, Algeria recorded “a marked increase” in its gas exports during the 1st quarter of 2021, thanks to an increase in production and demand of its customers, said, Tuesday, April 20, 2021, Sonatrach in a press release published on its Facebook page.
“Italy was, during the 1st quarter of the current year, the first destination for Algerian gas exports with a total volume of 6.4 billion m3, an increase of 109% compared to the year 2020 ”, according to the same source.
Algeria, thus, consolidates its position as Italy’s 2nd gas supplier with market shares of 35% against 16% during the same period of 2020.
“In second position comes the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), with an exported volume, in the 1st quarter, of 4.3 billion m3, an increase of 122% compared to 2020, which represents a market share of more than 47% against only 21% during the same period of 2020 ”, explained the oil and gas company Sonatrach.
With this performance, Algeria maintains its position as the leading gas supplier in this strategic market. In addition, gas exports have reached other markets in the Mediterranean and Asian countries, such as; China and Bangladesh, according to Sonatrach.
