Algeria- The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune canceled, Thursday, March 18th, 2021, his agenda initially planned for today with a view to monitoring the situation in Bejaia, after the earthquake that struck the region.
Earlier, President Tebboune instructed a ministerial delegation to get dispatched to the province of Bejaia to closely follow the situation.
A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the Algerian coast on Thursday, announced the Research Centre in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics (CRAAG) in a statement.
The epicenter was about 28 km northeast of Bejaia. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6miles) and likely produced strong-to-moderate shaking at the epicenter. Moderate-to-light shaking took place in northern parts of Algeria, including Algiers, Setif, Constantine, and Annaba.
To this end, the quake was felt this Thursday at 1:04 am (GMT + 1) in Algeria, Spain, Italy and Tunisia.
In addition to the province of Bejaïa, the earthquake was strongly felt in 12 provinces, including the capital Algiers.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, 15 aftershocks were recorded. Residents rushed to the streets, according to testimonies on social networks.
