Algeria detects 07 new cases of UK-based Covid-19 variant , 13 others with strain first seen in Nigeria

ALGIERS- Algeria’s Pasteur Institute announced, yesterday, Thursday, March 11th, 2021, the detection of 13 cases of Covid-19 variant first discovered in Nigeria and seven others, tested positive for the variant tied to Britain.

“Basing on the SARS-CoV-2 virus sequencing activities set up by the Pasteur Institute in Algeria in the context of monitoring variants currently circulating in the world, seven (07 ) new cases of British variant and thirteen (13) others of the Nigerian one have been identified so far…, “read a statement from the body posted on its Facebook page.

As such, the state research centre underlined that the seven cases, tested positive with the UK-based Covid-19 variant, have been identified in the capital Algiers and neighboring province of Blida, bringing the total number to 15 of infections from the variant discovered in Britain.

“These are: 05 cases from the province of Algiers (including three from the same family, having been in contact with one of the cases detected last week), and two (02) cases from the province of Blida,” highlighted the same source.

“Regarding the 13 confirmed cases of the Nigerian variant, “these are 03 cases from the province of Algiers (including two from the same family), 1 case from the province of Souk Ahras, 6 cases from the province of Tebessa , 1 case from the province of Ouargla (Hassi Messaoud), and 2 cases from the province of In Salah,” detailed the communiqué.

Finally, the Institute recalled that compliance with social distancing measures and wearing a protective mask as part of the health protocol are the best guarantees to ward off the spread of the Covid-19 virus and its variants.
