Dr. Mekki: Are people, infected with Covid-19, protected from new infection with variant?

Algeria- The Virologist and Head of department in the virology laboratory at the CHU of Lyon, Doctor Yahia Mekki, said that the UK-based Covid-19 variant is similar to the classic version Covid-19, with some changes in the genetic components.

As such, Doctor Mekki highlighted, in a statement to the Algerian Radio, today, Saturday, that the danger of the British version of Covid 19 lies in its severe spread.”

The professor added that people who had previously been infected with Covid-19 are not protected from the new strains. However, according to him, the new infection will be less harmful than the previous one.

Noting that the Pasteur Institute announced, on Thursday evening, the detection of two cases of the new British strain of Coronavirus in Algeria.

Earlier, Dr. Yahia Mekki, reassured that the “Sputnik” “Pfizer” and “Moderna” vaccines protect against the British variant which appeared in Algeria.

The WHO expert explained, in this regard, that the “tests carried out by the producers of Pfizer, Spoutnik and Moderna vaccines prove their effectiveness against the new variants which have appeared in South Africa, Brazil and Great Britain”.

Regarding vaccines acquired by Algeria, the official stressed that they are quite “effective”, adding that “Algeria must import as many doses of vaccines as possible” to neutralize this pandemic.

Referring to vaccination, Dr Yahia Mekki believed that vaccines are recommended because they give a very good immune response with the production of “specific antibodies, preventing the patient from reaching the danger stage”.
