“The UN must assume these responsibilities in Western Sahara,” argued Colombian Congress’ Vice Speaker Carlos German Navas Talero.
Speaking to Channel 3 of the Algerian Radio, Carlos Navas supported the Saharawi cause and the resolutions adopted by the UN. However, he deplored the absence of a new UN envoy, declaring; “We would like to reaffirm that in the absence of a new UN envoy, the Council and the international community should consider all alternative and peaceful means to advance the political path”.
He underlined the urgency of relaunching political negotiations between the parties to the conflict in Western Sahara and the need to “prepare the conditions for a new ceasefire”, after Morocco’s violation of that of 1991.
“We await with interest the appointment of a new personal envoy of the Secretary General” for Western Sahara, a post vacant for over a year, “to support the negotiations of the parties (Morocco / Front Polisario) and relaunch the political process” , said the former Colombian minister of justice.
Both parties as AU Member States must prepare the conditions for a new ceasefire, in close coordination with the AU Peace and Security Council, in accordance with all relevant provisions of its protocol, to achieve a just and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara occupied since 1975.
Carlos Navas expressed his commitment to sensitize public opinion in Colombia around the question of Western Sahara and defend the just cause of the Saharawi people for their right to self-determination and independence.
