Production of Sputnik-V vaccine in Algeria: Health Minister reacts

Minister of Health, Population and Hospital Reform, Abderrahmane Benbouzid, confirmed that there is a possibility to manufacture the Russian vaccine in Algeria, benefiting from the Russian experience, highlighting that Algeria needs 40 million doses of the vaccine.

The minister stated, in an interview with the “Russia Today” channel: “I had several meetings with the Russian Ambassador, adding that Algeria needs Russian assistance in this regard.

On the other hand, the minister stressed that the vaccine against Covid-19 will necessarily be free for all groups of the population.

He pointed out that Algerians, like all countries of the world, have a fear of vaccination, however, an awareness campaign has been launched for this matter.

The first official in charge of the health sector in Algeria confirmed that Covid-19 contaminations are stable in Algeria, adding that we are in better condition than some countries.

Stressing that Algeria has taken all its precautions, to avoid the third wave of the virus, as the epidemic is still present.

On the date of vaccination operation launch, the minister confirmed that it is related to the date of the vaccine’s arrival in Algeria, saying: “Our plane is waiting in Moscow.”

As such, the minister added: “We will start vaccinating after the arrival of the vaccine and we have all the capabilities to make the operation successful.”

Regarding the selection of the vaccine, the minister explained that the scientific committee started the process since last August.

The committee has selected 6 vaccines and arranged them according to what suits the health sector in Algeria.

On the side effects of the virus, the minister said that the vaccine development period is short, and it cannot be confirmed if it has side effects or not.

Benbouzid explained that the first batch of the Russian vaccine, which amounts to 500 thousand doses, is not sufficient.

The minister revealed that there are other large quantities of the vaccine that will arrive in Algeria during the months of February and March.

The minister explained that the vaccination of 60 or 70 percent of Algerians is sufficient, which requires 40 million doses of the vaccine.
