Will Italy, Portugal open consulates in occupied Western Sahara?

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs refuted the news relayed by some media outlets about the upcoming opening of a consulate in occupied Western Sahara.

In this vein, the Italian Foreign Ministry affirmed its support for the efforts made by the United Nations with a view to liberating the last colony in the African continent.

The same source added that Italy is following with great interest the latest developments in Western Sahara while guaranteeing full support for the efforts exerted by the United Nations.

A Spanish electronic magazine called “El Espanyol” had reported information about the upcoming opening of an Italian consulate in Western Sahara. The same magazine, also, reported the intention of the Lisbon government to open a consulate in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

In the same context, the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, also, refuted this news, dubbing it “false and incorrect” .

It ruled out that the Portuguese government had any intentions in this aspect, stressing that its position on Western Sahara “has not changed” and that it is in line with the United Nations’ resolutions on that matter.

It should be noted that the Moroccan regime has been trying, for months, to persuade some countries to open consulates in the occupied Western Sahara.
