Algeria reaffirms that the conflict in Western Sahara is a question of decolonization which can only be resolved through the application of international law, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) said on Saturday.

“The conflict in Western Sahara is a question of decolonization which can only be resolved through the application of international law and the well-established doctrine of the United Nations and the African Union in the matter, that is to say – the authentic exercise by the Saharawi people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, in accordance with the provisions of resolution 1514 (XV) granting independence to colonial countries and peoples, especially that the international community celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, ”the statement pointed out.

In this context, the statement added, that the proclamation of December 4, announced on the 10th, is “without legal effect, because it contravenes all the resolutions of the United Nations and, in particular, those of the Security Council on the question of the Sahara. Western, the last being resolution 2548 of October 30, 2020, drafted and defended by the American “pen-holder”.

Besides, the Algerian Foreign Affairs Ministry warned that (the proclamation) “could undermine the de-escalation efforts deployed in all directions in order to prepare the ground for the launch of a real political process and to convince the two parties in conflict, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front, of the need to engage, without conditions, on the path of dialogue, under the aegis of the United Nations, supported by the African Union “.

Algeria, whose position harmonizes with the international legality against the logic of force and dubious acts, reiterates its unwavering support for the just cause of the Saharawi people, concluded the MFA press release.
