ALGIERS- The Algerian Parliament, on Monday, released a statement on the situation prevailing in Western Sahara in which it qualified Morocco’s violation of the ceasefire agreement as “a breach of the commitments to settle the Sahrawi cause in the UN framework “.
In this context, the Algerian parliament said it was following “with great concern the latest developments in Western Sahara, following Moroccan violations of both the Ceasefire Agreement (concluded in 1991) and the Military Agreement (no. 1), signed by Morocco and the Polisario Front under the aegis of the UN “.
Affirming that these violations were a transgression “of the commitments to settle the Saharawi cause within the framework of the UN, with respect to its decisions and resolutions relating thereto”, the Algerian Parliament recalled the imperative for the United Nations Mission to organize a referendum in Western Sahara, allowing Minurso (resolution 690 of April 29, 1991) to carry out its main mission, namely the organization, as soon as possible, of a free and transparent self-determination referendum able to allow the Saharawi people to enjoy their future on their own territory.
“According to all UN resolutions, decisions and reports, in particular Security Council resolution N 2548 of October 30, 2020 as well as the UN SG report on the situation in Western Sahara of September 23 2020, the conflict in Western Sahara is based on the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination in full democracy as stipulated in the UN charter and resolution 1514 of the UN GA of December 14, 1960 “, again recalled the Parliament.
“Any attempt to obscure the truth about the future of this pending issue” is a flagrant violation of the principles relating to this cause, which is first and foremost a matter of decolonization, the same source added.
In this regard, the Algerian Parliament emphasizes “the importance of common action for Arab institutions with a view to putting aside Arab-Arab disputes, especially since the Sahrawi question is a cause on the UN agenda. “.
“We must all maintain consensus and rapprochement between Arab Parliaments in order to achieve the aspirations of our peoples, especially in this delicate context,” the statement concluded.
