KUALA LUMPUR- The World Badminton Federation (BWF) announced, on its website, the cancellation of the two international “Open” tournaments (juniors and seniors), to be hosted by Algeria at the end of October, along with several international competitions, due to the health situation linked to the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19).
Algeria was to organize the international tournament-2020 seniors (Futures series) from October 22 to 25 and that of juniors (Futures series), scheduled from 26 to 28 of the same month.
The senior tournament was to include singles and doubles events in both sexes, while only four events were included in the junior program: boys’ doubles, boys’ and girls’ singles and mixed doubles, and these tournaments were to allow participating athletes to score more. points to advance in the badminton world rankings.
In addition to the meetings planned in Algeria, the BWF has canceled four other competitions. For the moment, the BWF has maintained the SaarLorlux Open in Germany (27 Oct-1 Nov) and the European Junior Team Championship, scheduled for Finland from October 29 to November 2.
The BWF had recently postponed the final stages of the Thomas and Uber Cup, originally scheduled for Aarhus, Denmark, in October.
It should be remembered that the world badminton body had postponed or canceled several competitions included in the program for the month of last September, like the African junior individual championship in Cotonou (Benin) and the international tournament in Lagos (Nigeria).
