Independence Day: Remains of popular resistance martyrs laid to rest in Martyrs Square in El-Alia cemetery


ALGIERS- The remains of 24 leaders of the Popular Resistance, repatriated Friday to Algiers on board a military aircraft of the Armed Forces from France, were laid to rest, Sunday morning, at the martyrs square in the cemetery of El- Alia in the capital Algiers.

The burial took place in the presence of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, senior officials of the State and the Army, and members of the government.

During the funeral oration, the Minister of Mujahideen (National Liberation War veterans), Tayeb Zitouni, saluted the huge sacrifices of the popular resistance martyrs whose remains, mostly skulls, were sequestered over a century and a half in a Parisian museum, welcoming the completion of the long process of repatriation of these brave resistance fighters to the French soldier during the 19th century.

Shortly before, a final tribute was paid at the Palace of Culture in Algiers to these resistance martyrs by President Tebboune.

The day before, a public tribute was paid, at the same place, by many citizens, coming from several provinces of the country to these valiant martyrs, among which Cheikh Bouziane, Chérif Boubaghla, Moussa El -Derkaoui, Si Mokhtar Ben Kouider Al-Titraoui and Mohamed Ben-Allel Ben Embarek.
