ALGIERS- Combined detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP) arrested, Friday, hundred and nineteen (119) people in Tamanrasset, Ain Guezzam, Bordj Badji Mokhtar and Djanet, and seized equipment used in the illegal exploitation of gold, said, on Saturday, a press release from the Department of National Defense.
“As part of the fight against smuggling and organized crime, combined detachments of the ANP intercepted, on June 26, 2020 during separate operations carried out in Tamanrasset, Ain Guezzam and Bordj Badji Mokhtar in the 6th Military Region and Djanet in the 4th Military Region, (119) individuals and seized fifteen (15) all-terrain vehicles, one (01) truck “, noted the press release.
They, also, seized “twenty-two (22) generators and nineteen (19) jackhammers used in illicit gold panning operations as well as (75) bags of mixture of stones and raw gold”, added the same source, specifying, moreover, that “attempts to smuggle 6199 liters of fuel were foiled in Souk-Ahras, Tébessa and El Taref in the 5th Military Region”.
In the same context, elements of the National Gendarmerie and Border Guards “apprehended, in In-Amenas in the 4th Military Region and in Souk-Ahras in the 5th Military Region four (4) drug traffickers and seized 2966 psychotropic tablets”, while that elements of the National Gendarmerie “arrested in Ain Témouchent in the 2nd Military Region, two (2) individuals and seized two (2) vehicles loaded with 7870 bags of tobacco and 792 units of different drinks”.
In Annaba, El-Tarf and Skikda in the 5th Military Region, the Coast Guard “thwarted attempts to smuggle 34 individuals aboard home-made boats”, while “58 illegal immigrants of different nationalities were apprehended in Tamanrasset and Bordj Badji Mokhtar in 6th Military Region and Tlemcen and Nâama in 2nd Military Region “, concluded the same statement.
