ALGIERS- The National Office for Livestock Feeds (ONAB) started, on Tuesday, an operation to market a stock of 57,000 quintals of chicken at 250 DA / Kg in order to break the prices of poultry which have markedly increased last days, highlighted Mohamed Batraoui, President and CEO of ONAB.
This operation aims, according to the official, to “break the prices of poultry which have soared recently to reach 360 Da / Kg”, with the setting up of 51 points of sale in 23 provinces, like ‘Algiers, Blida, Oran, Annaba, Constantine, Tlemcen, Mostaganm, Ghardaïa, Sidi Belabbès, Adrar and Illizi.
More specific, Mr. Batraoui cites the points of sale distributed in Algiers in the municipalities of Chéraga (El Karia), Aïn Benian (at the headquarters of the National Interprofessional Office for Vegetables and Meats -ONILEV-), Hussein Dey, and Reghaïa where three units will enter into service tomorrow Wednesday.
In addition to the fixed points of sale, trucks (itinerant points of sale) have been mobilized to roam the cities and sell poultry to citizens who will not have to move, especiallyduring the sanitary confinement imposed due to the spread Covid-19, he added.
“Four trucks headed this Tuesday to districts of Bab el Oued, El Harrach, Mohamed Belouizdad and El Mohammadia in the capital, with the aim of selling white meats to citizens there, at a price of 250 Da per the kilo, “said Mr. Batraoui, while recalled that poultry production had known before the containment measures,” a considerable surplus, which led to a drop in prices “.
This surplus led, according to the president of ONAB to stock some 67,000 quintals of chicken, a quantity of which was taken out at the start of Ramadan, while the rest, namely 57,000 quintals, began to be used on Tuesday to counter rising prices.
