ALGIERS – Algeria was ranked 1st Maghreb country and 3rd African country with a “high” Human Development Index (HDI), according to the last annual report of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

At the Maghreb level, Algeria, ranked 82nd in the world, thus outstripped Tunisia (91st in the world), Libya (110th), Morocco (121st) with an “average” HDI of 0.676 and the Mauritania (161st place in the world), according to the 26th edition of the report.

In Africa, Algeria was ranked behind Seychelles (62nd in the world with a “very high” HDI) and Mauritius (66th in the world).

According to the data in this report, published on the UNDP website, 10% of the African population monopolizes 30% to 35% of the continent’s income. These figures remain lower than those of Asia (40% to 55%) or the Americas (45% to 55%).

The report points out that Southern Africa is the most “unequal” region on the continent, while North and West Africa are the “least unequal”.

At the Arab level, Algeria comes in 7th position, surpassed by the United Arab Emirates UAE (35th place worldwide), Saudi Arabia (36th), Qatar (41st), Bahrain (45th), Oman (47th) and Kuwait (57th).

The top of the world ranking is respectively occupied by Norway and Switzerland in 1st and 2nd ranks respectively.

Burundi, South Sudan, Chad, the Central African Republic and Niger come at the bottom of this ranking and occupy the 185th, 186th, 187th, 188th and 189th ranks respectively.

The HDI ranking assesses the level of human development in countries based on several data, implying, among other things, the education level of the population, health and income.
