Algeria: 57% of trade exchanges with Europe during 2019’s nine months

ALGIERS- Algeria traded, during the first nine first months of 2019, mainly with Europe, i.e. 57.33% % of the overall trading value, said the General Directorate of the Algerian Customs.

From January to September, trade between Algeria and European countries reached 34.19 billion dollars (bn usd), against 38.13 bn usd during the same period of 2018, down -10.33% , according to statistical data from the Directorate of Studies and Prospective Customs (DEPD).

European countries, thus, remain Algeria’s main partners, knowing that 62.54% of Algerian exports and 52.96% of its imports come from this region of the world, including the countries of the European Union (EU) .

Indeed, Algerian exports to European countries reached during the nine months of the current year, almost 17.02 bn usd, against 19.41 bn usd, during the same period of 2018, thus, recording a drop of (-12.34%).

For its part, Algeria imported from European countries for 17.17 bn usd, during the nine months 2019, against nearly 18.72 bn usd in the same period of 2018, a decrease of -8, 25%.

France, Italy, Spain and Great Britain remain the main partner countries of Algeria in Europe, said the same source.

The countries of Asia occupy, for their part, the second position in Algeria’s trade, with a share of 24.46% of the total value, to reach an amount of 14.58 bn usd, against 14, 17 bn usd, recording a slight increase of 2.92%.

Indeed, the countries of Asia bought Algerian products for an amount of 4.91 bn usd, against 4.55 bn usd in the same period of comparison, thus recording an increase of 7.89%.

Algerian imports from Asia practically stagnated in the nine months 2019, reaching a value of 9.67 bn usd, compared to the same comparison period 2018.

China, India, Saudi Arabia and Korea are the main partner countries of Algeria in this region of the world, according to Customs data.

In addition, the countries of America occupied third place with a share of 12.50% of the total value of trade with Algeria, an amount of 7.45 bn usd in the nine months 2019 against nearly 9.86 bn usd, at the same period in 2018, down 24.40%.

Algerian exports to the countries of the Americas fell by 39.33%, totaling 3.21 billion USD, against 5.29 billion USD. For its part, Algeria imported from this region with a value of 4.24 bn usd, against 4.56 bn usd, also down -7.10%, detailed the customs statistics.

The main partners of Algeria in this region of America are: Argentina, the United States of America and Brazil.

Algeria-Africa: 4% increase in trade

Furthermore, the DEPD revealed that Algeria’s trade with African countries improved by 4.02%, to reach almost 2.66 bn usd, over the nine months 2019, against 2, 55 billion USD in the same period of 2018.

African countries, including the countries of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), exported Algerian products for an amount of 1.68 bn usd, against nearly 1.63 bn usd, up 3.39%.

Algeria imported from this region for a value of 974.87 million USD, against 927.30 million USD, an increase of 5.13%.

The main partners of the country during this period are Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.

Trade between Algeria and the Oceania region increased by + 28%, going from 583.92 million USD to 747.40 million USD.

 

Indeed, Algeria exported to Oceania for an amount of 385.94 million usd, against 184.70 million usd, up 108.96% and imported from this region for 361.46 million usd US $ 399.22 million, down 9.46%.

Australia and New Zealand are the main partners in the Oceania region of Algeria.

Algeria’s overall trade with the various geographic zones during the nine months 2019 reached nearly 59.64 bn usd, compared with nearly 65.31 bn usd, in the same period in 2018, down 8 , 68%.

In general, the five main customers of Algeria, during the reference period, are: France, Italy, Spain, the United States and Great Britain.

The main suppliers of Algeria are China, France, Italy, Spain and Germany.

During the first nine months of 2019, exports from Algeria totaled nearly 27.21 bn usd, down 12.43%, while imports reached nearly 32.43 bn usd, down also , 5.27%, recalled the same source.
