UN must not allow “the law of the strongest” to prevail

New York (UN), 12 October 2019 (SPS)-Representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations, Sidi Mohamed Omar, said Thursday in New York that the United Nations must not “allow the law of the strongest to prevail” in the Western Sahara conflict, adding that the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination “could not be supplanted by colonial realities.”

“Are we going to allow the law of the strongest to prevail in Western Sahara and allow the Moroccan illegal occupation continue without opposing it, or are we going to defend unreservedly the principles of international legality and General Assembly resolutions on this issue,” said Sidi Mohamed Omar while speaking before the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee).

“The law of the strongest is not an option” and if this rule had prevailed in the past, many UN member states would have remained under the yoke of colonialism.

The Polisario Front representative also urged the Committee to set up measures to enable the Sahrawi people to freely exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence. (SPS)
