ALGIERS- Algeria has exported cement for about USD30 million in the first five months of 2019, up by about 850% compared to the same period in 2018, said Saturday the Customs’ Directorate of Studies and Prospective (DEPD).
As a reminder, Algeria is aiming to increase its exports of cement to 500 million dollars, over the next five years, according to the forecasts of the Ministry of Industry and Mines.
The surplus in cement production is expected to reach between 10 and 15 million tonnes over the next five years, which will boost exports of this building material to $ 500 million.
The current number of cement plants in the country (public and private) is seventeen (17) with a total capacity of 25 million tonnes, given that the national demand was 26 million tonnes in 2016.
According to forecasts, in 2020, the country’s production capacity should increase to 40.6 million tons with 20 million tons for the public group GICA, and 11.1 million tons for the individual Lafarge Holcim Algeria, as well as 9 , 5 million tonnes for the rest of the private operators.
