ALGIERS-The annual rate of consumer price inflation in Algeria hit 3.6% until May 2019, the National Statistics Office (ONS) told APS.
This increase is driven, essentially, by a 2.4% increase in fresh agricultural products, said the Office.
Indeed, this monthly change in the prices of fresh agricultural products is mainly due to higher prices for fresh fruit (+ 13.5%), potatoes (+ 22.4%) and meat. beef (+ 0.4%).
On the other hand, price of chicken meat decreased (-3%), fresh fish (-4.2%) and eggs with close to -0.9%.
For the prices of industrial food products (agri-food), they recorded a slight decline of nearly (-0.2%) last May and compared to April, according to the same source.
As for manufactured products, they increased slightly by + 0.2% and services (+ 2.3%) last May and compared to last April.
By group of goods and services, the increase in prices mainly affected education, culture and leisure (+8.9), clothing and footwear (+ 1.1%).
The miscellaneous products group also saw a slight upward trend, but a smaller one (0.9%), while the rest was generally characterized by stagnation.
In the first five months of 2019, consumer prices rose by nearly 2.4%, the ONS noted.
This upward trend affected all product categories, with the exception of fresh agricultural products, which fell by almost 0.3%.
Food goods increased by 1.02%. This increase was driven by beef (14.3%), fresh vegetables (4.2%) and mutton (2.8%).
From January to May 2019, other products were down, the most notable was chicken meat (-12.4%), eggs (-10.3%), fresh fish (-9.50%). %) and the potato with about (7%).
For their part, industrial food products (agri-food) increased by 2.3% in the first five months of 2019.
The rise in prices also concerned manufactured goods with + 3.9% and services with + 2.7%. As a reminder, Algeria’s inflation rate reached 4.3% in 2018.
