Algeria to celebrate Friday World Blood Donor Day

ALGIERS- Algeria will celebrate, Friday, the World Blood Donor Day with the slogan “Safe Blood for All,” which will be marked by the organization of various events, including conferences on the issue of blood donation nationwide, said Wednesday the National Blood Agency in a communiqué.

For this 16th edition, the planned events aim to “raise awareness of the universal need for safe blood in the delivery of health care and the crucial role played by voluntary donations in the advent of universal health coverage.”

The slogan used by the World Health Organization (WHO), “Safe blood for all”, aims to encourage more people around the world to become blood donors to ensure a sustainable national blood supply, sufficient to meet the needs of all transfused patients.”

World Blood Donor Day, established in 2004 at the initiative of WHO, is the birth date of Dr. Karl Landsteiner, a physician and biologist who discovered the ABO blood group system.

The 192 Member States of WHO, including Algeria, have advocated clear strategies for developing universal access to blood safety.
