Algeria to celebrate World Day of Quinoa Consumption, July 7, 2019


Algeria will celebrate World Day of Quinoa Consumption on 7 July 2019 in appreciation of the success of quinoa crop’s cultivation in Algeria since its first introduction to the country five years ago.


 In recognition of quinoa as one of the world’s most popular health foods and a complete protein and fantastic wheat-free alternative, and in response to the invitation of some friends in the original countries of this plant, namely; Peru and Bolivia, Algeria will celebrate World Day of Consumption of Quinoa on 7 July 2019.

Organized by the Association of El Oued province’s celiac patients, the event will take place in the pedagogical farm in Zaralda under the supervision of Biskra’s Technical Institute for the Development of Desert Agriculture.

Several individuals and associations will attend this event so as to share their experiences on quinoa crop’s cultivation, to wit; the National Association for Women and Rural Development and the National Union of Agricultural Engineers.

“Numerous topics and activities will be on the agenda of this event, including explanations, by both participants and organizers, on how to grow quinoa and its cultivation prospects in Algeria,” pointed out Supervisor of the celebration, Khaled Halima, Agriculture Engineer at the Technical Institute for the Development of Agriculture and Director of the Farm ‘El Barhana’ in Jamaa in the province of El Oued.

In this aspect, His Excellency the Ambassador of Peru to Algeria and the President of the Association of Rural Women in the province of Rahamna/  Morocco will be the guests of honor. The Ambassador will deliver a speech on the Quinoa cultivation in his country, the planet’s first quinoa producer.

The Moroccan experience in cultivating this plant will be presented to attendees. Besides, Quinoa’s seeds of different types and colors will be showcased along with explanations to encourage farmers planting this type of crop.

A lunch will be organized allowing participants to taste quinoa dishes of all kinds.

It is worth mentioning that quinoa dates back three to four thousand years ago when the Incas first realized that the quinoa seed was fit for human consumption.

According to WHFoods, quinoa “was the gold of the Incas” because the Incas believed it increased the stamina of their warriors.

Earlier, El-Oued Province hosted, on January 20-21, 2018, Quinoa’s First Forum, under the theme: * From the Andes Mountains to the Oases of Algeria *, with the participation of the Egyptian Quinoa expert Mr. Amrou Shams.
