ALGIERS – Algeria’s population increased to 43 million on January 1st 2019 against 42.2 million on January 1st 2018, the ONS said Tuesday.
Overall, the year 2018 was marked by a significant increase in the volume of deaths, the continued decline in the volume of marriages and stagnation of the divorces.
Improvement of life expectancy
Begun since 2014, the decline in the number of marriages is continuing in 2018. Civil registration offices registered 332,000 unions, nearly 8,000 fewer marriages than in 2017.
The crude marriage rate continues to decline, from 8.14 per thousand to 7.79 per thousand during the same comparison period, corresponding to the level observed 15 years earlier (2003).
Regarding divorce, the services of the Ministry of Justice indicated that 65,690 breakups were pronounced in 2018, registering a stagnation compared to the year before.
Life expectancy has, for its part, increased by one tenth, reaching 77.7 years; 77.1 for men and 78.4 for women.
Under the assumption of maintaining the pace of growth last year, the total resident population will reach 43.9 million as of January 1, 2020, according to the ONS.
