ALGIERS- Head of the State Abdelkader Bensalah chaired Wednesday in the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, the swearing-in ceremony of the new member of the Constitutional Council Aomar Bouraoui, in conformity with Article 183 of the Constitution.
With administrative and financial autonomy, the Constitutional Council is composed of twelve (12) members. Four (4) of its members are appointed by the President of the Republic including the President and Vice-President of the Council, two (2) elected by the National People’s Assembly, two (2) elected by the Council of the Nation, two (2) elected by the Supreme Court and two (2) elected by the Council of State.
The president and vice-president of the Constitutional Council are appointed for a single term of eight (8) years. The other members of the Constitutional Council serve a single term of eight (8) years and are renewed by half every four (4) years.
The Constitutional Council ensures the regularity of referendum, election of the President of the Republic and legislative elections. It proclaims the results of these operations and decides the appeals for provisional/ preliminary results of the presidential and parliamentary elections before the announcement of the final results.
