ALGIERS- Algeria’s port activity increased by 7% in the 1st quarter of 2019, compared to the 1st quarter of the previous year, Serport Group told APS on Monday.
These exports reached 19.9 million tonnes, an increase of almost 14%, including 2.4 million tonnes of non-hydrocarbon goods.
These goods are composed mainly of construction materials and agricultural products, significantly increasing growth to 42% compared to the first quarter of 2018.
With regard to hydrocarbons, SerPort raises a total of 19 million tonnes, an increase of 6% compared to the first three of fiscal year 2018, indicating that these products accounted for 63% of the total traffic recorded at the level of national ports.
In addition, container traffic, both for import and export, registered 523,186 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent) during the first quarter of 2019, compared to 463,394 TEUs for the 2018 period, an increase of 13%.
This traffic was handled mainly at the ports of Algiers (42%), Oran (16%), Bejaia (11%), Skikda (9%) and Annaba (8%).
Vehicle traffic reached 2,234 units in the first quarter of 2019, a decrease of 1% compared to the same period in 2018.
According to SerPort, port companies continue to carry out their development programs to support the growth of their businesses.
