ALGIERS- Minister of Culture Meriem Merdaci and Cuban Ambassador to Algiers Clara Margarita Pulido Escandell agreed on Tuesday, in Algiers, to benefit from the Cuban experience in restoring Algiers’ Casbah, said the Ministry of Culture in a communiqué.
Examining ways and means to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the cultural field, the two sides agreed to conclude “in the coming weeks” an agreement on the restoration of the Kasbah of Algiers.
On this occasion, the Minister of Culture hailed the various restoration actions carried out in Cuba, at the level of the old districts of Havana.
The Cuban experience is a pioneer in heritage restoration, especially in La Habana Vieja (Old Havana).
For UNESCO, La Habana Vieja is the epitome of the ancient city which preserved its urban, cultural and social cohesion thanks to a direct interest of the State and the implication of the population in the socio-cultural development.
Extending over an area of 200 hectares, Old Havana has more than 3,000 buildings, “the majority of which are in good condition”, and some 100,000 inhabitants of the 2 million Havanese.
