OUARGLA – A production of 100,000 quintals of cereals is expected in Ouargla, at the end of the harvest-threshing campaign of the 2018/2019 agricultural season, which was kicked off, Monday, by the authorities of the province.
Over a total area of 3,000 hectares across the communes of Ouargla, Sidi-Khouiled, N’goussa, El-Hedjira and Hassi-Messaoud, this cereal harvest, of which 80% is for seeds, according to the data provided on site by the Local Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA).
By varieties of cereals, the crop is composed of 80,000 quintals of durum wheat on an area of 2,229 ha, 12,400 quintals of soft wheat on an area of 355 ha and 10,000 quintals of barley on 299 ha, with an average yield of estimated at 35 quintals per hectare.
The DSA has indicated that all the conditions are set for the success of this campaign, as tractors, combine harvesters and transport vehicles of various tonnages are mobilized for the collection and delivery of the harvest to the storage places defined by the local department of the Co-operative Cereals and Pulses (CCLS).
Cereal storage capacity in Ouargla will be strengthened by the upcoming construction of two silos with a capacity of 140,000 Qx, according to agricultural services.
