Algeria – Thousands of trade unionists are organizing, on Wednesday, a rally at the headquarters of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) in Algiers, calling for the immediate departure of Secretary-General Abdelmadjid Sidi-Said.

Trade unionists are keeping up the pressure on Sidi-Said, despite the fact that he has put forward the date of the 13th congress in September, promising not to seek a new term as head of the union.

On the banners brandished by the demonstrators, one can read “Free the union”, “Sidi-Said off! Or slogans accusing him of betraying workers’ trust.
