ALGIERS – Algeria is following with “particular attention” developments in Sudan and calls for “peaceful and smooth transition of power in accordance with the will of the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations,” said Friday, a statement of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Calling for “a peaceful and smooth transition of power in accordance with the will of the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations”, the Foreign Ministry recalled in its statement “the historically solid relations” linking Algeria and Sudan, insisting on the need “to preserve the stability and security of this country”.
Sudan’s Defense Minister Awad Ahmed Benawf announced, on Thursday, the establishment of a military council to lead a two-year transition, adding that the former head of state is being detained in a safe place”.
He also announced the suspension of the Constitution and declared a state of emergency for a period of three months.
These political developments took place following the popular demonstrations that shake Sudan for more than three months expressing socio-economic demands.
