Algeria – The Constitutional Council chaired by Tayeb Belaiz will meet today, Wednesday, April 3, to establish the vacancy of the post of the President of the Republic, after the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika yesterday, reports the official News Agency in its Arabic language version.
This meeting will be chaired, in accordance with Article 102 of the Algerian Constitution, by Tayeb Belaiz. Paragraph 4, Article 102 stipulates that “in case of resignation or death of the president of the Republic, the Constitutional Council meets de jure and ascertains the permanent vacancy of the Presidency of the Republic.”
After this stage, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation “assumes the office of Head of State for a period of ninety (90) days, during which presidential elections are organized”.
If he does not resign, it is, therefore, Abdelkader Bensalah who will assume the mission of Head of State during the next 90 days.
